On September 2, 2013, Diana Nyad completed her record-breaking 100.86-mile, 52-hour 54-minute swim from Cuba to Key West, Florida. Aesthetic Prosthetics® played a role in her journey by designing and creating a custom-made silicone mask to protect her from deadly box jellyfish stings during her swim. It feels like yesterday and it’s hard to believe so much time has passed, yet we remain in awe of her achievement and are still so proud to have been involved!

With a staff comprised of Anaplastologists, Artists and a Prosthetist/Orthotist, our company has a very unique skill set. Sometimes, we are asked to create things we never considered. This is one of those instances which has shown us that there is a largely unmet need among injured athletes. Competitors who have suffered a broken nose or are in need of a Rhinoplasty/Septoplasty in order to improve their breathing and performance in the field or on the court need something to protect their nose during the months long healing process. There are generic masks available but, they aren’t very effective and inhibit a player’s vision.

A high school soccer star needed to have surgery to repair a broken nose but, her healing time overlapped with scouting season, which was crucial to her future as a college player. Her surgeon gave her clearance to return to playing with a face guard but the generic version did not fit. Here she is, back to the sport she loves best with her surgical site protected.

Soon after we finished her plastic mask, another soccer player with the same issue saw her playing with the mask on, and came to us to get a carbon fiber version, also pictured below.

Our first face mask client’s surgeon was very impressed with the mask and he even posted about it on Instagram!

Every client should have personal goals for what they hope their prosthesis will do for them; restore appearances, help them to avoid intrusive questions, or get back to their favorite sport. In this case, the client wanted to regain basic functions like holding keys and being able to shake hands again. This client didn’t have the desire to have a highly realistic hand or something myo-electric. He wanted something simple and straightforward to make his hand look whole again. A single color, custom made, utility partial hand made from highly durable silicone rubber was the solution for him.

We’ve had the pleasure of making this client two realistic prosthetic partial hands since 2010. As a carpenter, he has realized over time that he no longer needs a realistic hand under his glove while at work. This time, he requested we make him a custom sculpted utility hand from High Consistency Rubber (HCR). HCR is an extremely durable platinum silicone that we sculpt by hand with no molds. By using his utility prosthetic hand at work and keeping his realistic prosthesis for evenings and days off, he can extend the life of both pieces.

Whether a client wants an exceptionally realistic prosthesis or something a bit more simple and task oriented, we are happy to provide our clients with the full range of options and are open to changes should those needs evolve over time.

Custom Sculpted HCR Utility partial hand pictured next to metal framework used during the sculpting process, 2017.

This client traveled to us from out of state. She had three highly realistic prosthetic fingers created as well as a utility hand. Having prostheses made isn’t just about restoring the look of the fingers she lost. These prostheses are about playing with the kids in her family and not feeling like she has to hide her hand so they don’t get concerned. About grabbing keys off of the counter and not dropping them for lack of grip and getting back to her family tradition of bicycling on the weekend. They are about heading to the gym with friends and not being afraid to pick up weights, going a full workday without the pain of bumping the sensitive amputation site, and so much more. Each person’s life is impacted differently by their amputation. Our goal is to listen to our clients’ needs and help them get back as many of the things that amputation has taken from them as we can.
